Headwaters Genetics

Minnesota · 45°N · Outdoor-bred

Seed that finished a Minnesota season before it ever reached a pack.

Headwaters Genetics is a small outdoor breeding project at the top of the Mississippi. We make F2 regular seed for pheno hunters who want cold-hardy, wind-tested, rot-resistant plants, selected under a real northern sky instead of a grow tent.

21+ only. Nothing is for sale yet. Batch one is planned for November 2026, after Minnesota Department of Agriculture seed permitting is complete.

Why breed outdoors at 45°N?

Easy conditions hide weak genetics. A short season, cold nights in September, rain-driven rot pressure, and wind that never quits are the filter every Headwaters selection has to pass.

Cold nights

Finishes before frost

Only plants that ripen inside a northern window make the cut. Late finishers are culled, no matter how pretty.

Wind & rain

Structure that holds

Open-field exposure selects for stem strength and airy bud structure that sheds September rain instead of rotting in it.

F2 regulars

Built for pheno hunting

F2 is where the grandparents' hidden traits separate back out. Variation is the point: a pack is a search, not a clone.

Small batch

Labeled under Minnesota seed law

Germination-tested lots, honest labels, and a breeder who posts the records. First release is a few hundred packs, not thousands.

How a Headwaters pack gets made

The whole thing is documented in public, day by day, on the grow log and on Instagram. The best reason to trust a seed line is watching it get made.

Select the parents

Two seasons of outdoor selection for nose, structure, finish time, and how a plant handles a bad week of weather.

Make the cross, keep the records

Hand-collected pollen, bagged branches, labels on everything, so every seed has a known mother and father.

Grow the F1, open the F2

The F2 generation going into packs is the one where the full range of traits shows up for you to hunt through.

Harvest, dry, clean, test

October harvest. Seed is cleaned, sized, germination-tested, and labeled to Minnesota Department of Agriculture requirements before anything is released.

Founders List

First access to batch one, in Minnesota, when licensing is complete. No spam. A handful of emails between now and release: harvest, germ-test results, and the release date.

Joining the list is not a purchase, reservation, or offer to sell. Nothing will be sold until Headwaters Genetics holds the required Minnesota permits.
